First appearance: World 1

1-UP Mushrooms are bonuses that made their first appearance in the original Super Mario Bros. and continued to appear in its sequels and spin-offs. They are a rare type of mushroom that gives the player an extra life when collecting one of them. They can be found mostly in Invisible ? Blocks, albeit there is some that are in dangerous parts.

In Mario Forever, they made their first appearance in World 1-1, and have the same function as of all Mario games. However, there's some levels that will make the hidden block with the mushroom disappear if the player died on a said level.

Appearance

A 1-UP Mushroom has the appearance of a mushroom with a white-spotted green cap on the top, and two-dotted eyes below its white stem.

Effect

Once Mario collects the mushroom, the player will be instantly rewarded with an extra life.

The 1-UP Mushroom is a rare, but helpful power-up, as the player can receive an immediate extra life once Mario touches it, allowing him to give them another chance if they die in a level.

However, out of the four power-ups in this game, the 1-UP Mushroom's locations are usually risky or can't be seen, that's because they're usually in an invisible ? Block, or in a difficult spot to be seen. A good example is World 8-3, as the power-up is invisible and is located to the left side before the moving platforms part. If the player wants to grab it, they have to reach and grab it quickly before it falls. Note that this level has a fast rising lava, as the player would most likely die to it if they were too slow to climb the level. If they did lose a life, the power-up would disappear, even after checking and hitting the invisible block that contains it.

Trivia

  • In the Save Game Room, there exists a hidden 1-UP Mushroom if the player decides to shoot fireballs to the second cloud. It requires shooting two fireballs, and then shooting two more once the first two disappear. If done correctly, a face will appear on the cloud and it will reward the player with a 1-UP.
